Twala AI Connectors: Manage Envelopes From Your AI Assistant With MCP

Twala now works with AI tools outside Twala. Any AI tool that supports custom connectors through the Model Context Protocol (MCP) can connect to your Twala account, then find and read your envelopes, templates, and timestamps, and create, send, remind, correct, and void envelopes for you. AI connectors are available on every plan, at no extra charge.

MCP is an open standard for connecting AI tools to the software people already use. With it, the chat assistant on your computer or phone can stop guessing about your paperwork and start answering from it. Ask “which of my envelopes are still waiting for a signature, and who hasn’t signed?” and it answers from your real envelopes in Twala.

What an AI connector is

An AI connector is an AI tool outside Twala that you have allowed to use your Twala account. It is separate from Lex, the AI inside Twala, which answers from your files within the app. A connector brings Twala into the AI tool you already work in.

A connected tool acts as you. It sees exactly what you can see in Twala, including your team’s envelopes that your role shows you, and it can do only what you can do. It never sees more than you would.

What a connected tool can do

When you connect a tool, you allow two kinds of access.

See your envelopes, templates, and timestamps: their names, people, statuses, and dates. The tool can search them by name, list your envelopes (all, sent, or received, by status), open one to see when each recipient was invited, opened, finished, or declined, read an envelope’s history, open templates with their roles, and open timestamps with their hashes.

Create, send, remind, correct, and void envelopes as you. The tool can:

  • Create an envelope from one of your templates, filling each role with a name and email, or from PDF files already in one of your workspaces, as a draft or sent right away
  • Send a draft
  • Send a reminder to whoever’s turn it is, once a day per envelope, as in Twala
  • Correct the name or email of a recipient who hasn’t finished
  • Void an envelope that is out for signature, or delete a draft
  • Retry sealing an envelope whose sealing failed

In practice, that turns routine follow-up into a sentence. “Send our standard NDA template to the new supplier’s managing director.” “Remind everyone who still has to sign this month’s service agreements.” “The lease renewal went to an old email address; correct it and resend.” A good AI tool asks you before it sends, voids, or deletes anything, and Twala marks those actions so the tool knows they change things.

What it can never do

Some things stay with people, by design. A connected tool can never:

  • Sign, approve, or decline anything for anyone, you included. Signing is always done by the person signing, in Twala.
  • Read what your documents say. No document text, no values recipients entered, no downloads, and no signed copies.
  • Notarize, book appointments or consultations, timestamp new documents, or change your account, or reach anything else in Twala.

That line matters. An AI tool can chase signatures, but it can’t give one. The act of signing, and everything that makes a signature legally meaningful, stays with the signer.

How to connect a tool

  1. In Twala on the web, open your account menu (your picture at the top right) and choose AI connectors.
  2. Press the address shown to copy it.
  3. In your AI tool, add a custom connector (some tools call it a remote MCP server). Name it “Twala” and paste the address.
  4. The tool opens Twala’s Connect to your Twala account page in your browser. Sign in if it asks.
  5. Check the page. It names the tool, shows the account it will act as, and lists what it will be able to do. If you want the tool to read but never change anything, untick the checkbox for creating and sending envelopes.
  6. Press Connect, or Deny to refuse.

The request is good for 10 minutes. Only connect a tool you trust, and only one you started connecting yourself.

Built to be accountable

Letting software act on your behalf is only comfortable if you can see what it did. AI connectors are built so you always can.

  • An email every time. Each time a tool is connected, Twala emails you with the subject “AI tool connected,” naming the tool, its access (Read and write, or Read only), when it was connected, and the website the approval went to. There is no switch to turn it off, because it concerns your account’s security.
  • Every action is labeled. On an envelope’s Activity, each line a connected tool did ends with “through” and the tool’s name. The audit trail on the signed document’s Signing Certificate says the same, and so does Twala’s audit log.
  • Connections are personal. A connection belongs to the person who approved it. It never gives anyone else access to your account, and your team’s owners and admins don’t see it.
  • Disconnecting is instant. Open AI connectors, press Disconnect, and the tool’s next request is refused. A connection that goes unused for 30 days ends on its own.

For a company, that means an AI tool’s work on a contract is as traceable as a person’s. Anyone reviewing the Signing Certificate can see which steps came from an AI tool, and on whose authority. Teams may still want a simple policy on which AI tools employees may connect to work accounts, the same way they decide which apps may reach company email.

Your data and AI training

Twala never uses your data to train AI. What a connected tool reads from Twala, which is names, statuses, people, and dates, never what your documents say, goes to that tool, and the tool’s own provider’s terms decide what happens to it there. Connect only tools whose terms you are comfortable with.

Plans and limits

Every plan can connect AI tools, including the free Personal plan. An envelope a connected tool sends counts against your plan’s envelopes exactly as if you had sent it in Twala, and it follows the same rules and limits. See pricing for what each plan includes.
